Why did it take me so long to…

Why does it take us so long to finally do the thing? You know, the thing, the thing that you’ve been putting off forever—that vacation, that weight loss challenge, or even reading that book you heard about from a friend. It’s the thing you said you would do at the beginning of the year, and now that the year is nearly three quarter of the ways done, you’re wondering if maybe you need to just wait until next year? Yeah, you just need more time, but you’ll definitely do it then. Remember, the thing that you would do this month that you forgot to do last month, or my favorite, I’ll do that thing when I’m finally….

I think you get the point.

Why do we take so long to get things done? What is it that stops us, that makes us hesitate? Is it a simple matter of resources, or maybe, is it something else? For some of us, it is as simple as resources, but I think that would be an oversimplification of a very human process. Virginia Satir, noted author and therapist, states that one of the strongest drives in human existence is to keep things the same. Yeah, keep things the same. So what does that mean?

Well for each of us, I believe it’s a matter of threshold. When have you had enough? When have you experienced enough of the same bulls!&% that you just can’t take it anymore? When you’re thinking, I don’t know what the future would look like, but I can’t keep doing this anymore…making these same sorts of decisions…following this habit…being in this same type of relationship…I’d rather not know exactly what my future will look like than be stuck doing this same thing over and over again. That’s called hitting threshold, and when you hit threshold, you’ve had enough. I should do this, then has finally become, I must do this, now…I can’t stand another second, another day, another minute of this…and there you go. You’re finally ready to make a change.

I’d like to point out that many of us experience “threshold” at different levels. For some of us, we have less patience or less ability to remain comfortable in an uncomfortable situation—maintaining the status quo. For others, until physical well being is threatened, only then will they reach threshold, and sometimes even then, it takes far more to uproot them from the familiar comfort of their status quo.

Unfortunately, many of us who get stuck in this mindset fail to realize this one universal truth.

You do not have any guarantees that you’ll have that time in the future.

It’s a fact of life. We have no guarantees on the amount of time we spend here on this mortal coil, and no human can truly know the numbering of their days. The fleeting nature of life is what gives sweetness and added purpose to our days. If you only had seven days to live, how would you spend it? What would you change? What would give real meaning and impact to your life right now?

For some of us, it really is all about timing, working on our inner being and arranging our lives to ensure that when we’re finally ready to make these big changes, then everything falls into place. That’s great! I celebrate that! There is a divine timing to all things, but the old adage of “God/Goddess/Spirit helps those who help themselves” is a good one to go by. We need to be making changes right now, real ones in our bodies, minds, spirits, and lives if we want to manifest those transformations, to live those beautiful dreams in our physical lives. We have to marry our physical action with that of our souls guidance. For those who are still sitting on the sidelines, still watching from the cheap seats, what’s stopping you?

I hope this little post has helped. If you would like some insight or guidance into your life path and process, contact me in order to book a service like a Tarot reading or Reiki Healing session. I highly recommend reading about Virginia Satir and Brene Brown, which I’ve found to be extremely helpful on my personal journey. Thank you, and if anything resonated or spoke to you, then I’m glad.

With Grace and Warmth,
